A brilliant discussion of Thomas Mann as an "intracultural " author, not merely a canonical German novelist.
This paper shows convincingly the international character of Thomas Mann, firstly in the French and English passages in Der Zauberberg and secondly in the works of two later authors who incorporate Mann's character Hans Castorp into their narrations: the Scottish author Andrew Crumley in his 2004 novel Moebius Dick, and the well-known anime author Hayao Miyazaki, in his The Wind Rises. A richly satisfying study that sheds light on Mann and his remarkable novel, The Magic Mountain.
